This new law supercedes and overrides the previous protections from the Judicial Council of CA, which expired August 31.
Remember, in most circumstances to benefit from this protection, you must be able to PROVE that your inability to pay your full rent is due to COVID-19. (for instance laid off from job, had to stay home with kids due to school closure, hours were cut, caring for someone with COVID or chronic illness)
If you are financially impacted by COVID-19 and can’t pay your full rent, make sure to let your landlord know in writing ideally BEFORE rent is due, but no later than seven days after the rent is due, and save copies and documentation as proof. Paying partial rent is better than paying nothing.
If you are having trouble paying your full or partial rent, please contact our St. Vincent De Paul Society who may be able to provide assistance!
